White Oak vs. Red Oak - A Closer Look at a Species

Oak (species name “Quercus”) is one of the more common hardwoods for wood workers and manufacturers. Oak has traits such as hardness, appearance, machinability, and relative abundance that have helped make it as popular as it is today. There are over 75 different varieties of oak in North America, but the most common are “Red Oak” (quercus rubra) and “White Oak” (quercus alba).
